The Beach Bites Back

Left the house without shoes. Had planned to meet up with Carin and Dusty on the beach half way between the 2 villages and then run back but just before they came into sight I felt a sharp pain in my foot. Walked (carefully) on to their house and Carin brought us home in the car. I couldn't find anything obviously wrong but it felt as if there was a wound on the sole of my left forefoot. Next morning prodded a bit more at the place where it hurt and could feel a miniscule something sticking out a fraction of a millimeter. Finally managed to extract the irritant with a pair of tweezers. At first I thought it was a sharp piece of shell but on closer examination it looks like a tiny (fish?) tooth.

Dogs Love Running

Listened to a couple of these podcasts at the start of my run. Let Minnie off the lead when we were on the less busy stretches. At one point I had her on the lead and there were two large dogs pestering her a bit and making her nervous so I let her loose and she outran them in huge highspeed circles. Seeing a greyhound show what it can really do is so spectacular to watch. I took my shoes off as soon as we reached the sand. I think I'll just leave them at home tomorrow as I ran the road home barefoot too and it's a good smooth run.

Didn't manage to get out of bed in time for the pre-dawn light but managed to stop myself saying 'Oh it's not worth going out at all now' by remembering I had fresh podcasts to listen to and that I'd regret it all day if I didn't get out at all this morning. Also remembered to take a photo of The Running Skirt. (Must get someone to take an action photo of it sometime - actually, I've just remembered I have a video function on the camera. I could do my own video analysis of my running form...)

Skirting on Boards

Ran some of the route I did yesterday, but with a camera this time. And a frock. Well, a running skirt. Bought in the Lidl for 5€ - it was the last one there and I thought it might actually be too small but it fitted fine and was actually perfect for running in the heat. It has built in shorts underneath and the skirt bit being a few centimeters longer means my thighs don't feel too exposed to the world. Ran along the wooden walkway through the polder. Listened to various non-running podcasts as mYpod seems to have eaten most of the running ones. The News Quiz had me laughing out loud several times. The bit about Scotland having to hand over the nuclear weapons from Faslane was brilliant.
Almost forgot - saved a Sharpei from being raped by a lovesick Great Dane on the way home. The owners had lost track of him when he'd caught a whiff of the on heat bitch so I dragged him back to them when the very worried owner of the female dog told me they were further up the path.

Combined my run with an errand in Haasdrecht. Ran along the towpath to Oudewater, hoping to meet the horsedrawn barge which I'm sure I'd read somewhere left from Oudewater at 10am every Saturday in July and August. No sign of it, but I did enjoy the run along the water, stopping on the way back for coffee at a tiny help yourself stall set up by a local camping place.

Was stopped by a police patrol on the Emmalaan looking for someone who'd been reported knocked out in the Oorsprongpark. I hadn't seen anyone but made a detour through the park to see if I could spot anything suspicious. This deflected my route from my my more usual one and I did a bit more city running before heading out to Groenekan.

Goose Stepping

Why did the geese cross the path? To get to the other ditch obviously. These geese appeared one by one as they filed across in front of me, having goose stepped up from one ditch and over into the next one.
Last photo is of a tiny bird with flashes of yellow that I could only get in silhouette. No idea what it was but there were 2 of them, very quick and darty, like skinny chaffinches.
Run was a bit slow but picked up speed and form a bit after the first 8k.

MyPod seems to have eaten most of my running podcasts so I had Desert Island Discs and Scotland Outdoors for most of the run with a bit of AC/DC at the end for the last bit home. And now my Garmin has hiccups as I'm trying to upload the data. All this technology is all very well but it's a bit annoying when it doesn't do what it's supposed to.

Somehow not such an easy run as yesterday when I was fairly effortlessly going faster than usual. But still, got 10+k done and explored the new raised walkway through a bit of the polder that is normally closed for walkers. Yesterday was the first day it was open now that the brooding season is past.
